RENT

in going back through all my old posts, i found this.

here, let me blow that up for you:

kara would say that you have to listen to RENT in music hell, and that i should be ashamed of myself for knowing all the words to the soundtrack. but i do, and i have tickets to it in march.

the comments for that post have been lost because that post was on my old site.  but i know for a fact that kara left a snarky comment.

and then on 09 june 2009 at 10:25 p.m., lo and behold, what is kara's FB status?

Kara G: the tango maureen (i take back everything i ever said, melissa!)

i'm going to label this post "being right about music."

wilco and the weekend

last night we went to see wilco at the cain's. i really underestimated how hard it is to stand up for four hours on a wood floor, with second-hand cigarette smoke, sober, and pregnant. ultimately the bouncer let me sit on one of the entry tables by the door. i couldn't see anything because i was behind the sound station, but let's face it - i couldn't see anything standing in the crowd, either - i'm 5'2".  and i always like to stand back a LITTLE BIT from the person in front of me so i'm not staring directly at the center of their back, but people seem to view this as an invitation to come stand in the open spot.  usually tall people.  in particular last night, two couples who were all at least 5'6".  and the women, instead of standing still and watching the show, kept leaning in to each other to talk, blocking my view no matter which way i leaned.  why do i even bother.  i told J's DJ friend Jerry that i need to invent a little fold-out stool to carry into concerts that i can stand on.  i envision it looking like a little tripod with a flat non-skid surface on top.

but the concert was amazing.  i love wilco.  although the linkin park concert that we saw two weeks ago in OKC was definitely easier on my feet because we had seats.

wilco played a one-and-a-half hour set, and then proceeded to play an HOUR LONG ENCORE. and then as we were walking out the door, they came on for a SECOND encore, but the bouncers wouldn't readmit anyone. it's just as well because by then i was ready to get in the car and sit down. i had even worn tennis shoes. gone are the days of shots and crowd-surfing at the cain's. at least for a while. pregnancy saps the energy out of you, and your driving motivation becomes finding a chair. it's hard to find the same energy as i once had dancing barefoot on the hard dirt at roxie's, but i will still go there this summer and sit around the bonfire with a sprite instead of a whiskey. god forbid i get boring, too.

at least hopefully i will be one of those hip parents like my cousin Jasen who took his just-turned-13-year-old son to the concert last night because Tanner likes wilco.  or at the very least, if i can't be hip, i at least hope that i have kids like Tanner who are sage enough to appreciate good music from a young age.

oh, and i think i caught whatever J had. i'm so mad. and it waited until the end of the weekend to manifest itself. could i have not gotten sick on friday afternoon? sunday afternoon is a terribly inconvenient time, work-wise, to start feeling poorly. i woke up this morning and my ears and throat hurt. bad, bad sign. so i'm taking it easy and drinking lots of grapefruit juice.

it's a beautiful day outside, too. i woke up and threw open the windows, put on the grateful dead's "american beauty" and made homemade biscuits, scrambled eggs, and sausage for J and his friends who'd crashed here last night after the concert. at the very least everyone can rest soundly knowing that they have a designated driver for the next six months.

i know, i know...

...i've been neglecting this blog lately, a fact which has been called to my attention by more than one person. sorry, guys.

honestly, nothing blogworthy has really been going on lately. work, home, work, home, work, home. it's tiring and monotonous, but it's my life and i love it.

something exciting or funny is bound to happen to me in the next few days and i promise, ya'll will be the first to know. oh, wait - i might get to be on the news to talk about the TCBA mardi gras party. that's sort of interesting. not really as interesting as i thought it'd be when i was a kid. back then it was like, "ohmygod you were on the news you're famous everyone saw you my mom recorded it!!!" now it's all, "well, crap, am i gonna have to wear a suit that day?"

J's working nights this week, including tonight. it's supposed to get a little icy and i'm beginning to hear it coming down, clicking on the patio door. time to go to bed, rather than stay up and worry. i'm getting better about it (i used to wake up in the middle of the night and call him to make sure he was okay for no reason at all), but of course i'd prefer that he be home. luckily it's not often.

oh, i got attacked by amazon.com today, as is wont to happen approximately two times a month, usually near the first part and again around the middle part, which is in no way to be construed as being related to payday. this time the monster tricked me into buying these old gems from my high school days that are missing from my collection and in need of replacement. and all because i heard "fake plastic trees" on the radio. maybe i need to work on my impulse control.

Her green plastic watering can / For her fake chinese rubber plant / In fake plastic earth...

i think that's probably on my top twenty.

don't judge me

but i'm going to that dark place where people with bad taste in music go when they die.

i just bought these on amazon.com for about $.50 each:

i used to have them when i was a kid. in a fit of nostalgia, i couldn't resist.

i guess the question is, if i just willingly purchased two Yanni cds, what kind of music will i have to listen to in music hell? good music? will they play tupelo honey in my hell?

kara would say that you have to listen to RENT in music hell, and that i should be ashamed of myself for knowing all the words to the soundtrack. but i do, and i have tickets to it in march.

but you know what? i have tickets to see wilco in march, too, so they cancel each other out in terms of cool-points. and i have all of the nirvana albums and most of pearl jam except my vitalogy got lost in college, and i know the lyrics to dark side of the moon the entire way through from memory and i think jackson browne's late for the sky is one of the best albums ever along with led zeppelin II and i think beautiful loser is the best song bob seger ever recorded.

so no one can ever tell me i have bad taste in music. pffft. my dad brought me up right.
