wilco and the weekend

last night we went to see wilco at the cain's. i really underestimated how hard it is to stand up for four hours on a wood floor, with second-hand cigarette smoke, sober, and pregnant. ultimately the bouncer let me sit on one of the entry tables by the door. i couldn't see anything because i was behind the sound station, but let's face it - i couldn't see anything standing in the crowd, either - i'm 5'2".  and i always like to stand back a LITTLE BIT from the person in front of me so i'm not staring directly at the center of their back, but people seem to view this as an invitation to come stand in the open spot.  usually tall people.  in particular last night, two couples who were all at least 5'6".  and the women, instead of standing still and watching the show, kept leaning in to each other to talk, blocking my view no matter which way i leaned.  why do i even bother.  i told J's DJ friend Jerry that i need to invent a little fold-out stool to carry into concerts that i can stand on.  i envision it looking like a little tripod with a flat non-skid surface on top.

but the concert was amazing.  i love wilco.  although the linkin park concert that we saw two weeks ago in OKC was definitely easier on my feet because we had seats.

wilco played a one-and-a-half hour set, and then proceeded to play an HOUR LONG ENCORE. and then as we were walking out the door, they came on for a SECOND encore, but the bouncers wouldn't readmit anyone. it's just as well because by then i was ready to get in the car and sit down. i had even worn tennis shoes. gone are the days of shots and crowd-surfing at the cain's. at least for a while. pregnancy saps the energy out of you, and your driving motivation becomes finding a chair. it's hard to find the same energy as i once had dancing barefoot on the hard dirt at roxie's, but i will still go there this summer and sit around the bonfire with a sprite instead of a whiskey. god forbid i get boring, too.

at least hopefully i will be one of those hip parents like my cousin Jasen who took his just-turned-13-year-old son to the concert last night because Tanner likes wilco.  or at the very least, if i can't be hip, i at least hope that i have kids like Tanner who are sage enough to appreciate good music from a young age.

oh, and i think i caught whatever J had. i'm so mad. and it waited until the end of the weekend to manifest itself. could i have not gotten sick on friday afternoon? sunday afternoon is a terribly inconvenient time, work-wise, to start feeling poorly. i woke up this morning and my ears and throat hurt. bad, bad sign. so i'm taking it easy and drinking lots of grapefruit juice.

it's a beautiful day outside, too. i woke up and threw open the windows, put on the grateful dead's "american beauty" and made homemade biscuits, scrambled eggs, and sausage for J and his friends who'd crashed here last night after the concert. at the very least everyone can rest soundly knowing that they have a designated driver for the next six months.

SO JEALOUS you saw Wilco live. I pray for my nonexistent babies to have good taste in music, seriously.
