last night on the way home, as i crossed the river bridge outside of downtown, i hit a big pothole and the frame of the car went *BAM!* i thought, "ouch! that was bad!" but i chalked it up to the 2+ inches of rain we'd received in the last 18 hours and the way that heavy rains like to wash out the temporary gravel filling from every pothole in town (which-as most of ya'll know-occur roughly every seven feet).
by the time i got halfway home, i heard a noise loud enough to cause me to turn down the radio (KMOD was playing CCR - "Born On The Bayou" - of course i had it turned up too loud - DOOT doot doot doot doot doot...). so i changed lanes, exited and parked on the access road to the new target/belk/lowe's/supermega superstore superpaved superparkinglot that they've recently seen fit to destroy some more bucolic pasture land to build.
i get of out of my car in the cold, rainy dusk, and sure enough: big. fat. flat. tire.
luckily i was not too far from home and J was there in no time to render assistance, my knight in a shining white ford F250. he had it changed within ten minutes. god, i love him. the last time i had a flat tire was sometime in 2000, i was in OKC (where i can't find anything but penn square mall and bricktown) with jeremy, and we were equally helpless. i mean, i could change a tire in a pinch, but it was raining, and i was wearing heels. i'm rationalizing. whatever.
anyway, i go to the tire place first thing this morning to get the flat patched because i'm rolling around on a donut, which is not safe what with all the renegade potholes and all. i'm sitting in the lobby at 8am, bleary-eyed and reading an article in Outdoor Magazine about professional blood trackers (in case i ever lose my deer, of course) (also, ew) and BAM! i jumped so much i dropped the magazine. i immediately knew what it was. there goes my tire. i hope it ain't kilt no one (that's the Outdoor Magazine talking).
luckily everyone was fine, except for the tire, which was a goner. it being time to replace the tires anyway, and in the interest of even tread wear, we are now the proud owners of four shiny new tires.
most exciting investment this year? yes. most exciting investment this year.

LMAO. Nice to know you have a knight... and good luck with the potholes. I swear it is more like every 2-3 feet, but I'm not getting out to measure.
multiple paragraphs on the adventures of buying new tires. and i thought i was verbose.... ;)
see, the fun thing about having a blog, as we have discussed before, is that it's pretty much totally narcissistic. you can write as much as you want about whatever the hell you want to. at least that's what I tell myself.
I got a flat last year on the freeway and just kept driving, wondering what that noise was. People were pointing and everything. I finally pulled over and made Jason come fix mine, too.
these are famous last words: I have never had a flat. I've run out of gas, had the battery die and all those kind of fun things, but no flats. yet.
trying to couch that one.
and I liked the phrase maria called out too.
also, I think new tires can be fun--your car drives a little differently and gets better mileage, or at least mine did! glad jake could come to your rescue!
